This piece asks a sharper question than whether Chinese brands can compete globally: what makes a brand unmistakably Chinese? Guo Pei and Vera Wang offer contrasting answers. Guo Pei’s legitimacy in Paris came without diluting the craft, symbolism or roots of her work; the institution validated her, it did not define her. Vera Wang built an American brand in which Chinese heritage was never the organising idea, and its IP extends across licensees after WHP Global’s acquisition. The broader point: brands rarely become stronger by becoming less themselves. As China builds institutions able to confer legitimacy, the question shifts from how Chinese a brand should look to what it can believe, make or express that could only come from China.
